Outdoor enthusiasts whether hiking, running, or cycling know how inconvenient it can be to pull out a smartphone for navigation. Now, that’s about to change: Google Maps is officially available on compatible Garmin smartwatches, bringing turn-by-turn navigation straight to your wrist.
Available through the Connect IQ Store, the app allows users to receive real-time directions without ever needing to reach for their phone. Compatible models include the Garmin Venu 3, Vivoactive 5, Fenix 8, and many others.
“Whether you’re exploring a new city, planning a run, or riding with friends, Google Maps will keep you on track”, said Susan Lyman, Garmin’s Vice President. “Turn-by-turn notifications are a major step forward for anyone who wants to stay hands-free”.
The app provides subtle vibrations when a turn approaches and allows users to preview the next three directions with a simple tap on the watch screen. Meanwhile, all training metrics remain accessible, and post-workout data can be seamlessly synced with Android fitness apps via Google Health Connect.
While Garmin isn’t the first to introduce this feature Apple Watch users already have access to Apple Maps it’s a significant move that enhances Garmin’s smartwatch ecosystem. The Google Maps app is free to download via the Connect IQ Store, making it a valuable tool not just for athletes, but for anyone who wants easy, phone-free navigation around the city.
