Animated Avatars on Whatsapp? Meta tests profiles

WhatsApp keeps rolling out interesting updates for its users. Recently, it surfaced that the popular messaging app, owned by Meta, plans to give profiles more customization options—namely, the ability to add an animated avatar alongside your main photo.

Right now, the feature is limited to a small group of testers. The team at WABETAInfo spotted it in Android beta version 2.25.18.14, available through the Google Play Beta Program.

Whatsapp Avatars

For those who already have access, a new section appears in the avatar settings that lets you display the avatar directly on your WhatsApp profile. Once enabled, you can pick a background color and an animation, giving your profile picture a dynamic, more expressive vibe.

The end result is a kind of digital “double portrait.” In the chat info panel, your contacts will see a quick animation that looks like flipping a coin—switching between your real photo and the customized avatar. The goal is to make the experience more original and personal, without changing the familiar profile layout.

It’s worth noting that an earlier, limited test of this feature only showed avatars within the chat info. This newer version, however, puts the avatar front and center and makes it far easier to access.
