SpaceX acquires xAI, confirming rumors that had circulated in recent days: the company has acquired xAI. Both firms, as is well known, are controlled by Elon Musk.. Both firms, as is well known, are controlled by Elon Musk. The deal creates a technological powerhouse valued at approximately $1.25 trillion, positioning it as what Musk envisions to be the most ambitious vertically integrated innovation engine ever built not just on Earth, but beyond it.

SpaceX and xAI: Data Centers in Orbit
The merger shows what happens when SpaceX acquires xAI, uniting space infrastructure and artificial intelligence in a single system.
With this merger, the new entity now oversees a broad ecosystem that spans artificial intelligence projects such as Grok, space transportation systems including rockets and Starship, satellite connectivity through Starlink, and even the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Musk has described the ultimate mission in almost poetic terms: to build a “sentient sun” capable of understanding the universe and extending the light of consciousness to the stars a statement that remains as visionary as it is ambiguous.
A key strategic objective is to expand artificial intelligence beyond the planet’s surface. The plan reportedly includes deploying orbital data centers to alleviate the growing pressure that AI infrastructure places on Earth’s energy grids and cooling systems. To make this possible, SpaceX is considering the creation of an enormous satellite constellation potentially numbering up to one million satellites dedicated not only to communications, but also to distributed computing in space.
Eyes on the Moon and Mars
The announcement also reiterates SpaceX’s long-standing ambitions for deep space exploration. The Moon and Mars are explicitly mentioned as future operational frontiers. Starship, SpaceX’s next-generation launch system, is expected to play a central role by transporting massive payloads to the lunar surface, paving the way for the construction of a permanent base.
In the longer term, these efforts are framed as stepping stones toward the ultimate goal: the human colonization of Mars. By combining space infrastructure with advanced AI capabilities, Musk appears to be betting that intelligence both artificial and human will be a fundamental driver of humanity’s expansion beyond Earth.
